it's all shock n roll in the media department

I short one to keep myself/ you up to date with what is going on in my lessons. The shocking cinema module is slowly taking shape and I was impressed by the level of debate that American History X provoked. Similarly all the clips shown in Monday's lesson were both enlightening and certainly valid. I think the thing to keep in mind is that shock is not hierarchical - rather it is the combination of the cinematic and the cultural that combine to produce shock within the spectator. So if Green Street shocks then it shocks - the main thing is being able to actually describe and analyse that shock in a critical fashion. Anyway next week we watch our first set text - The Accused. I should set some preliminary work - but it's christmas so i am being considerate.

Meanwhile the year 12 are slowly making their way through their short films - there are some good ideas here - remember to make it cinematic. My suggestion is to watch a whole heap of short films. It's the visual style that counts - it's the shot, the framing, the composition that makes it.

Try the BBC site - short films - there is a whole heap of them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ - search for short film.
